Russats Posted May 19, 2015 Report Posted May 19, 2015 I'm going to attempt my front brakes soon. Discs and pads I'm going to use this thread http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?s=&showtopic=13380&view=findpost&p=109948to help me. Any other hints and tips are welcome please. I've got a nice breaker bar at the ready to do the job from removing a rear wheel of a scooter to change the tyre. Quote
bigdave982 Posted May 20, 2015 Report Posted May 20, 2015 Thatll do itJust be sure to make sure hub face is clean before fitting disc otherwise might run out of lineBe gentle driving for a while so discs and pads bed in Quote
BrianH Posted May 20, 2015 Report Posted May 20, 2015 Don't buy the cheapest pads/discs you can find either - National are particually ones to avoid I've discovered. Quote
Russats Posted May 21, 2015 Author Report Posted May 21, 2015 http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=131225294479 I was looking at these. Or Brembos are £45 for a pair of discs Quote
sparky Paul Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 If you can find another tenner, I would avoid no-name parts and go for these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-GALAXY-MINTEX-FRONT-BRAKE-DISCS-300mm-PADS-KIT-2001-2006-/231094607783 BrianH is right, you'll soon regret fitting cheap discs, and IMHO you can't go wrong with Mintex. BrianH Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 Reason I say that is the ones I currently have squeal. Horrificly so. Every time you go anywhere near the brake pedal. I was hoping they would stop but if anything it's got worse over the last 30000 miles its done on them. I managed to find some ferrodo ones on eBay just need to get round to fitting them. Pagid are generally fine as well. Not used mintex but would go for those over the unbranded ones personally Quote
Russats Posted May 21, 2015 Author Report Posted May 21, 2015 Thanks for the advise I'll go for the Mintex ones I think. A clamp is sufficient to push back the piston isn't it, after clamping the pipe and opening the nipple of course. Quote
bigdave982 Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 Depending on your model there are at least two different size discs as well288 i think or 300 mmYou may want to check to avoid getting it all apart and finding you got wrong ones Quote
sparky Paul Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 (edited) A clamp is sufficient to push back the piston isn't it, after clamping the pipe and opening the nipple of course. Yes, you can just push the fronts in. Easiest way I find is to insert a large sturdy flat bladed screwdriver through the slot in the caliper and gently prise the outer pad towards the piston, this will push the piston back in. Obviously, you will need to do this before removing the caliper slide, aim to rest the tip of the screwdriver in line with the centre of the piston so that it pushes in squarely. You may need a bit of packing to push the last bit in. If you are fitting new pads and discs, you will have to make sure you push the pistons fully home, as you will need every bit of travel to accomodate the new parts. I would think yours will have the 300mm discs, but as bigdave says, it is worth checking - there are 3 different sizes. Edited May 21, 2015 by sparky Paul Quote
Russats Posted May 22, 2015 Author Report Posted May 22, 2015 Cheers guys I'll get them measured before even ordering anything. It's not worth investing in a wind back tool or anything then? Quote
sparky Paul Posted May 22, 2015 Report Posted May 22, 2015 Rewind tool not needed for the front, but worth its weight in gold when doing the back ones! Quote
BrianH Posted May 22, 2015 Report Posted May 22, 2015 I've got a set of them i picked up a while back - I use them on the front as it makes it dead easy, but could work around not having it if required. Essential to have something for the back though. Mine is similar to this one if you decide to go that route I've not managed to find a car they don't fit onto yet either. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-NEW-BRAKE-CALIPER-PISTON-REWIND-WIND-BACK-TOOL-KIT-22-PIECES-SET-DIY-/311183724428?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4873fecf8c Quote
Russats Posted May 23, 2015 Author Report Posted May 23, 2015 Thanks. I plan to do the back in near future. So I'll invest in that kit I think currently on offer at £15 Quote
viperclive Posted May 27, 2015 Report Posted May 27, 2015 Well worth the £15, money well spent. Quote
Russats Posted May 29, 2015 Author Report Posted May 29, 2015 Is there an idiots guide to bleeding the brakes correctly somewhere? I assume it would be a good idea to bleed them afterwards? Quote
